Renewable energy installations

Sotham Engineering is a forward thinking mechanical and electrical contracting company with many years’ experience in the design and installation of renewable energy systems.  We are committed to delivering the highest quality services to our customers and are pleased to offer advice on the feasibility, costs and benefits, whether for a new building development or to replace or compliment an existing system.

Best practice energy management

We care about the success of renewable technology and will never install a system that will not work effectively. We continually research and review the latest innovations in this sector and are fully accredited for all of the technologies we supply and install. All of our work is carried out and audited to MCS MIS 3005 and BS –EN 12831 standards giving you total assurance in the quality of our work and service.

Reduce your carbon footprint

Solar PV is an increasingly popular way for generating low cost electricity direct from our most abundant natural resource – sunlight. Because no fossil fuels are burned, solar PV is also a great way to drastically reduce your carbon footprint. It also gives you independence from the ongoing threat of rising energy prices. A common misconnection is that direct sunlight is required for solar PV to be effective; this is not the case. Solar panels will still generate electricity even on the cloudiest of days.

Have we got the roof space?

Panels or tiles should be installed on a roof or wall with a sufficiently large surface area that faces predominantly south, and is not overshadowing by other buildings or trees. If space is limited it may be that a solar hot water and heating is more suitable. Either way, we will be happy to advise.

Feed in tariff

Under the government’s feed-in tariff (FIT) scheme, you will benefit from a set tariff for the electricity you generate and, in most cases, also be paid for the surplus electricity that you send back to the National Grid. Expect to see a return on investment of between 10 and 15% per annum.

Maintenance free

A good quality solar panel system can last for over 25 years and are maintenance-free too; you just need to ensure they stay relatively clean and unobstructed. Panels tilted at 15° or more will keep fairly clean through rainfall anyway. Otherwise, an annual inspection is as much as is required.

A tailored service

As well the traditional solar panels, we can also offer in-roof solar tiles. Although these cost more, they replace (rather than sit on top of) conventional roof tiles, and therefore offer much improved aesthetics. We can also now offer triangle shaped panels meaning we can make maximum use of the surface area of any roof.
